9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

After interviewing five more people I was able to further refine what the prototypical customer will look like for my phone retrieving device. While most people share the need of having to retrieve their phone from the gap between the center console and the seat in cars, some people are not moved enough by the need to actually buy a product that would prevent that. Finding other multipurpose uses to build into the product might help alleviate this issue. Or making it a desirable accessory for the car. My product faces the issue of perhaps being too specific.

Inside the Boundary
Who is in: Those with cell phones and cars
What the need is: The need to retrieve cell phones that fall between the center console and the seat in cars
Why the need exists: The gap is very tight and it can be a hassle to stick your hand in and fish out your phone

Outside the Boundary
Who is Not: Those who do not feel strongly enough about the inconvenience this need presents to actually buy a product
What the Need is Not: As of now the need is not anything to do with safety in the car or any other uses
Alternative Explanations: People are clumsy with their phones

  1. Hey there! Very clear and succinct post. The only thing I didn't understand is what you meant by 'Alternative Explanations: People are clumsy with their phones' ?
And I do agree that trying to find an extra use or feature for your object is a good idea to widen the possibility of your market. Maybe it could actually include a charging station?
I also think that it would be helpful to break this process down by demographics of your potential customers. Out of all the people with cell phones and cars, there is a lot of variety. Older drivers, like soccer moms, grandpas, and the arthritic are more likely to consider your product then, say, college students, for example.

  2. Christian,

I agree that fishing my phone out of the gap between the center console and the seat is a problem, but personally I wouldn't spend money to buy a device that can do the work for me. While it is an inconvenience, it's not enough of one to make me want to buy it. I think you'd be on the right track by working in different features to the product because then there would seem to be more value in it.
