21A – Reading Reflection No. 2

1. The general theme in the book was to not be afraid to take risks in order to learn from new experiences and also to make sure the way you approach your goals is motivating and not discouraging. Scott Adams advocates the use of systems in order to make each day you follow the system a success. With a goal any deviance from the goal is a failure while with a system it is simply a rest day from the system. Adams also explains that we should be willing to take sample jobs to see if a certain position is right for the individual. We should not be afraid of wasting our time in the job as one can take valuable information away from the experience and subsequently find a job better suited to them.

2. The book enhanced what I have been learning in ENT 3003 as it gave me direct tips on how to achieve the goals I have set for myself in this class. If I was to decide to pursue my business idea I could use Adams tip on systems and how to use them to set myself up for success in my business idea. This book also enhanced my understanding that it is okay to take risks or fail when pursuing a business idea.

3. The exercise would involve converting a goal into a system and then following that system for thirty days and giving feedback on how having a system instead of a goal affected their motivation to achieve that goal.

4. My biggest aha moment was when reading the chapter of systems vs goals. The use of a system makes a lot of sense to be and I am planning on beginning to use systems instead of goals in my own life.

  1. I really wished you would have given the book title and author's full name, since it sounds like a valuable read. I couldn't really tell, though. This article is more like a summary and less like a review, which I think is better than what I do, since it's more true to the spirit of the assignment. I appreciate how succinct you were here, although I also wish you went more in-depth on the idea behind systems, since I didn't really understand your recommendation for the exercise we could do in class.
